Hani Shennib criticizes the selection of “Tetteh” to head the United Nations mission

Dr. Hani Shennib, on his Facebook page, criticized the selection of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, Hanna Sirois-Tetteh, as Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

Schneib described the decision as “reflecting either a serious deficiency in Secretary-General António Guterres’ understanding of Libyan culture, or his disregard for the need for extreme seriousness and urgency to resolve the political and security crisis in Libya.”

He added that this appointment represents “a prolongation of the crisis,” calling on Libyans to “rely on themselves and reunite without waiting for any effective role from the United Nations.”

Shennib did not clarify in his post the nature of the “lack of understanding of Libyan culture” that he referred to in his criticism of the selection of “Tita” as head of the United Nations mission in Libya.

It is noteworthy that Tetteh headed her country’s government between 2014 and 2015, in addition to being assigned to the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2013 and 2017.

Tetteh also held several positions in the international field, during the years 2022 and 2024, when she was appointed Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, and Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union, during the period between 2018 and 2020.
