Hanif Kureishi returns to London. The Anglo-Pakistani writer, hospitalized in Rome for 6 months after an illness he accused at the end of 2022, is preparing to leave Italy. Kureishi, from his diary on Twitter, announces that the transfer to a London facility is imminent, where he will continue his therapies. “Since my accident in December, which left me without the use of my hands and legs – a considerable discomfort – I write by dictation a weekly diary, which you all read and respond to with much love. You have kept me alive” , writes Kureishi ahead of the most recent update.

“Things are looking up. We will definitely be leaving on Tuesday and will finally be back in London. Strangely you get attached to places even when you’ve spent a lot of time lying on your back watching a fly moving across the ceiling. Every time I went back to bed I was looking for that fly, wondering where it was and how it was. Had I become that fly, circling the same space, looking for a way out? But I knew there was no way out for the fly. One day it was gone. The ‘I’ve searched everywhere but to no avail,’ he writes.

“This situation is coming to an end and another situation – perhaps even more uncomfortable, we just don’t know, we’ll find out – will arise. I’m going by taxi, then by plane, then in another taxi. I’m going to a hospital in West London , then to another hospital in West London, then to another facility just outside London. Nothing happens for months, then it happens all at once and you seem to have no idea what’s going on. You, dear reader, will be kept informed. There will be many adventures from here on.”
