New Delhi: India ranks 126th in the list of happiest countries in the world. The list of the happiest countries in the world was announced in the World Happiness Annual Report released on March 20, which is celebrated as International Day. Several Nordic countries top the list.

Finland tops the list of happiest countries. Denmark is second and Iceland third. The Happiness Report is published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The list of happiest countries is prepared based on people’s assessment of life, positive feelings and negative thoughts.

‘The Nordic countries deserve special attention in many ways. There, the Covid death rate between 2020 and 2021-27 was only a third higher than in the rest of Western Europe. The Nordic countries ranked high in 2021 for kindness towards others, especially helping strangers. They are still ahead in 2022,’ said John Helliwell, a member of the committee.

Meanwhile, India, one of the fastest growing economies, is ranked below neighboring countries Nepal, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the report. China is at 64th position, Nepal at 78th position, Pakistan at 108th position, Sri Lanka at 112th position and Bangladesh at 118th position. According to the report, Afghanistan, ruled by the Taliban, is lagging behind. The Russia-Ukraine war has caused a drop in the rankings of both countries. Russia is 72nd and Ukraine is 92nd. Other countries in the top ten are Israel (four), the Netherlands (five), Sweden (six), Norway (seven), Switzerland (eight), Luxembourg (nine) and New Zealand (ten).
