They say that whoever works what they like doesn’t really work. And if, on top of that, he does what he loves, he does it in the best conditions, then the performance should be higher. At least, for some at Jumbo-Visma, that seems to be the secret to success in recent years.

In an interview with La Provence, Christophe Laporte stated that his sporting growth in the Dutch team is due to happiness. “They understood that for the runners to win they have to be happy. And that suits me wonderfully, ”he said.

The Frenchman, 3rd in Omloop and 6th in Kuurne, shone last year when he arrived at Jumbo and everything indicates that he is continuing on that path. “Things are going very well here, they are very human and they see that we are well. Nothing is left to chance,” he explained.

And it may be so in your case. The facts support his statements. But it is always difficult to generalize, especially when more than one of your colleagues has said otherwise. And not because of being mistreated, but because of the fierce internal competition and the lack of opportunities.

Tobias Foss and Sam Oomen are two who do not hide their annoyance and are considering leaving Jumbo at the end of the year, when their contracts expire. Primoz Roglic himself will not ride the Tour de France after Jonas Vingegaard’s explosion and it will be necessary to see if that has repercussions in the future.

So yes, the conditions are ideal in human and material terms, but the place that each one has to occupy is not always the desired one and, in the end, this generates wear and tear and a lack of motivation. Happy cyclists, yes. But also, Laporte should have added that -at least in his case- occupying the role expected by him.
