A poll was released on the 23rd (local time) showing that Vice President Kamala Harris (59), who is solidifying her position as the Democratic presidential candidate, would beat former President Donald Trump (78), the Republican presidential candidate, within the margin of error in a hypothetical two-way matchup.

According to a poll of 1,018 registered voters conducted by Reuters and polling firm Ipsos from the previous day to the same day, in a hypothetical matchup between the two candidates, Vice President Harris recorded 44%, leading former President Trump, who recorded 42%, within the margin of error (±3 percentage points).

This is the first time that Vice President Harris has surpassed former President Trump. In the survey conducted on the 1st and 2nd, former President Trump had a 1% point lead, and in the survey conducted on the 15th and 16th, Vice President Harris and former President Trump were tied at 44%. This survey was conducted after US President Joe Biden officially supported Vice President Harris as the next candidate after dropping out of the presidential race.

In a multi-candidate matchup that included a third candidate, Vice President Harris recorded 42%, former President Trump 38%, and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 8%. Reuters did not specifically explain the margin of error for the multi-candidate matchup, but reported that Vice President Harris had an advantage over former President Trump “outside the margin of error.”

In this survey, 56% of all voters rated Vice President Harris as “mentally sharp and able to meet challenges,” compared to only 49% who said the same of former President Trump.

Tony Fabrizio, who runs polls for the Trump campaign, released a piece titled “The Harris Honeymoon” about the polling showing Harris’s approval ratings. “Most mainstream media coverage of Harris will be positive, which should energize the Democratic Party and some parts of the Democratic Party, at least in the short term,” he said. “That means we’ll see Harris’s approval ratings go up, or even outpace former President Trump.”

“In the short term, the polls may change and Harris may solidify her party’s base, but that doesn’t change who she is,” he said. “The honeymoon will be over, and voters will return to focusing on Harris’s role as Biden’s co-pilot.”
