Harris accepts Democratic presidential nomination / The Day

“On behalf of the people, on behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender or the language your grandmother speaks…I accept your nomination,” the vice president said.

Acknowledging that not everyone in the audience is her supporter, Harris said that November’s election against Republican Donald Trump is “a precious, transitory opportunity to overcome the bitterness, cynicism and division of the past, an opportunity to chart a new path forward — not as a party or a faction, but as Americans”.

“I will be a president who will unite us around our highest aspirations,” she said. “The future is always worth fighting for. And that’s our fight right now. The fight for America’s future.”

In her speech at the convention, Harris also expressed her commitment to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and continued support for Ukraine.

“Now is the time to reach an agreement on the hostages and an agreement on the ceasefire,” the vice president said.

As Harris stated, she and President Joe Biden “are working to end the war in Gaza so that Israel is safe, the hostages are freed, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can exercise their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.”

“As president, I will strongly support Ukraine and our NATO allies,” Harris promised.

The vice-president also recalled that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she helped to “mobilize the global response” so that Ukraine could defend itself against Russian aggression.

She slammed the Republican challenger’s public praise of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying “I will not bow to tyrants and dictators.”

Tyrants “support Trump because they know he’s easy to manipulate through flattery and coaxing. They know Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an autocrat himself.”
