Freedom, a song used as a staple of black civil rights protests
Beyonce has a history of supporting the Democratic Party
With US President Biden withdrawing his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, Vice President Kamala Harris, who was selected as a replacement candidate, chose Beyoncé’s song ‘Freedom’ as her campaign song.
On the 22nd (local time), CNN reported, citing Harris’s sources, that Harris’ election camp received approval from Beyoncé’s side to use Beyoncé’s “Freedom” during the presidential campaign.
Beyoncé is known to be a singer with strict standards when it comes to using her music for campaign purposes, but the outlet reported that when Harris’s camp asked to use her song, she immediately approved.
Harris previously walked out of her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, singing the song after a speech.
Beyoncé has not officially commented on US President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
However, CNN analyzed that the fact that he immediately gave permission for Harris’s camp to use his song was an indirect expression of support for Harris. The campaign and Beyoncé did not respond to requests for comment on this matter.
Meanwhile, ‘Freedom’ is a song included in Beyoncé’s 6th regular album ‘Lemonade’ released in 2016. Through this album, Beyoncé revealed her identity as a black woman and spoke out for black human rights. ‘Freedom’ is a representative song sung at black human rights protests.
Beyoncé has supported Democratic presidential candidates in the past. She sang the national anthem at former President Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2013 and attended a rally in support of then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016.
