The Vice President Kamala Harris said in a new interview that he plans to appoint a republican in her cabinet if elected in November.
During a clip from an interview of CNN which will air in full tonight, the Democratic presidential candidate said she was committed to welcoming diverse points of view.
“I have dedicated my career to fostering diversity of opinions. I believe it is important to have people with different viewpoints and experiences at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made,” she said. Harris a Dana Bash of CNN“And I think it would be beneficial to the American public to have a member of my Cabinet who was a Republican.”
The interview is the first of Harris since she formally became the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden dropped out of the presidential race last month and endorsed his own presidential bid.
Harris would not be the first Democratic president to appoint Republican Cabinet members to his administration if elected.
The former president Barack Obama He nominated several Republicans to his Cabinet, including then-Rep. Ray LaHood, R-Ill., as transportation secretary and Robert Gates as defense secretary.
Republican presidents have also appointed members of the opposition party, including some from previous administrations.
Robert Work, a Democrat who served as deputy defense secretary during the Obama administration, was a holdover from the former president’s administration Donald Trump.
