US Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris commented on the statements of Republican candidate Donald Trump, who asked whether his Democratic rival was “Indian” or “black.”

“The American people deserve better,” Harris said at a women’s group conference in Houston, according to the New York Times.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, in an interview on Wednesday, attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, questioning whether she is really black or if she is using race as a political tool.

“Harris has always been of Indian heritage and has only promoted Indian heritage,” Trump told a group of interviewers at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago. “I didn’t know she was black until a few years ago when she said she was black.”

“The American people deserve a leader who speaks the truth and doesn’t respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts,” Harris added. “We deserve a leader who understands that our differences don’t divide us — they are a fundamental source of our strength.”

“And now she wants to be identified as black,” Trump said of Harris, the first black woman of South Asian descent to become vice president in US history. “So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?”

“I respect both groups but clearly she doesn’t, because she was Indian all along and then suddenly she turned around and became a black person,” he continued.

For its part, the White House was quick to respond to Trump’s comments, describing them as “insulting.”

The provocative comments by the Republican presidential candidate are the latest in a series of increasingly personal attacks on Harris, whom he also accused this week — who is married to an American Jew — of anti-Semitism.
