Mads Mikkelsen, known for his role as the villainous Dr. Voller in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” recently revealed a unique behind-the-scenes experience during the filming of the highly anticipated fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise. In an interview with GQ, Mikkelsen shared that Harrison Ford, who portrays the iconic character Indiana Jones, would jokingly refer to him as a Nazi every time they crossed paths on set.

The Danish actor’s character, inspired by Warner von Braun, a Nazi rocket scientist who later played a significant role in NASA’s rocket research, contributed to the creation of an intriguing dynamic. Mikkelsen explained that he was fascinated by how von Braun was pictured walking alongside Americans as if he had no association with the war crimes committed during World War II.

Mikkelsen humorously recalled Ford’s playful antics, stating, “Normally, he would just see me wherever I was, randomly, far away, and he would scream ‘There goes a Nazi!'”

Warner von Braun, while claiming to be an apolitical scientist, was later found to have used slave labor in his rocket program, resulting in the deaths of thousands of prisoners. Mikkelsen’s character effectively embodies this aspect of von Braun, presenting a hardened Nazi who manipulates his position as an American scientist for personal gain.

Although Ford’s playful remarks led to some awkward moments with new crew members who were unaware of the inside joke, Mikkelsen appreciated the veteran actor’s approach, referring to it as Ford’s way of “warming up.” Mikkelsen praised Ford’s energy and legendary status while also acknowledging his efforts to create a comfortable atmosphere on set.

Interestingly, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” marks the third time Harrison Ford’s character has confronted Nazis as the main adversaries. The first film, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” saw Jones battling Nazis attempting to weaponize the Ark of the Covenant, while the third installment, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” featured Nazis on a quest for the Holy Grail.

Despite the film not receiving overwhelming praise, both critics and audiences have acknowledged its relatively better quality compared to its predecessor, the widely criticized “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” With a B+ CinemaScore and a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, fans of the series are encouraged to give the latest Indiana Jones adventure a chance.

However, the film’s underwhelming performance at the box office raises questions about whether positive word of mouth will be enough to boost its commercial success. As fans eagerly await what may potentially be the last Indiana Jones film, only time will tell if the legendary archeologist can overcome the challenges he faces in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
