Harris Elected as Democratic Presidential Candidate… “Secured Majority of Delegates”
Vice President Kamala Harris has been nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate. For the first time in American history, a black woman has been nominated for president. If she wins the November election, she will become the first female president of the United States.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Jamey Harris announced on the 2nd (local time), the second day of the roll call vote to select the party’s presidential candidate, that “Vice President Harris has secured a majority of delegates for the presidential nomination.” Vice President Harris is scheduled to accept the nomination on the 5th, when the five-day roll call vote ends. Vice President Harris said in a statement on the 2nd, “I am honored to be the Democratic Party’s provisional presidential nominee.”
With this, Harris, a mixed-race black woman born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, is set to face off against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in November’s election. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the first female presidential candidate elected by both the Democratic and Republican parties, lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
Vice President Harris has begun to lead Trump in some polls due to her rapid rise in approval ratings. According to the average of polls conducted by ABC News’ election data analysis agency FiveThirtyEight as of the 3rd, Vice President Harris is ahead of Trump with 45.1% approval ratings, compared to 43.6% for Trump.
In the situation where Vice President Harris was allowed to pursue the race just two weeks after President Joe Biden’s resignation, the Trump camp, which had not been able to find a clear way to quell the ‘Harris wind’, has intensified its negative offensive. At a campaign rally in Atlanta, Georgia on the 3rd, Trump said, “There are 19 ways to pronounce Kamala’s name,” and “Biden failed to pronounce her name.” By emphasizing that Kamala is an Indian name, he continued to divide people among races by saying that Vice President Harris is “not black, but Indian.”
Regarding the presidential TV debate, candidate Trump said on social media that day, “If it’s not on Fox News on the 4th, I won’t meet with him at all.” He canceled the TV debate hosted by ABC News on the 10th, which he had originally agreed to with President Biden, and suggested holding a TV debate hosted by the conservative Fox News.
Trump also argued that the method of banning interruptions without an audience should be changed. He expressed his intention to refuse to debate unless it is advantageous to him, as he was concerned that if he fails to gain an advantage in the TV debate, the “Harris wind” would grow even stronger.
However, Vice President Harris’s presidential campaign dismissed the request to change the TV debate plan, saying, “This is not a joke,” and “Trump is scared and running away from the debate he already agreed to and running to Fox News to save himself.” Harris’s presidential campaign and ABC News said they will hold the TV debate on the 10th as scheduled even if candidate Trump refuses to attend, CNN reported.
