Gabriel Thomas (28, USA) became the first Harvard graduate to win a gold medal in Olympic track and field.

Thomas crossed the finish line first with a time of 21.83 seconds in the women’s 200m final at the Paris Olympics held at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France on the 7th. Harvard’s campus newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, reported that “Thomas is the first Harvard graduate to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field.” James Connolly won the men’s triple jump at the first Olympics in Athens in 1896, but he had dropped out of Harvard at the time.

Thomas became the first American to win the women’s 200m Olympic title in 12 years, following Allyson Felix, who won the 2012 London 200m title and whom she idolizes.

The New York Times analyzed that “she developed gradually with patience” and “her consistent practice of honing her running form to get the best elasticity with little effort has borne fruit.” Thomas, who won a bronze medal in the 200m and a silver medal in the women’s 4x100m relay at the 2021 Tokyo Games, has steadily improved her skills, such as placing second in the 200m and winning the women’s 4x100m relay at the 2023 Budapest World Championships.

Thomas entered Harvard University in 2015 and majored in neurobiology and international health. After graduating in 2019, he went on to pursue a master’s degree in public health at the University of Texas Health Science Center, earning his master’s degree last year. He chose this major for his younger siblings who are being treated for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thomas worked and studied at a health clinic for 10 hours a week, but he also ran steadily. And on this day, Thomas beat out the women’s 100m gold medalists Julian Alfred (22.08, St. Lucia) and Brittany Brown (22.20, USA) to 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, to become the Olympic champion.
