Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison After Sexual Assault Retrial

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, by a New York judge following a high-stakes retrial over a 2006 sexual assault. The ruling marks another chapter in the landmark legal saga that ignited the #MeToo movement.

Harvey Weinstein appeared in a downtown Manhattan courtroom on Wednesday in a wheelchair, his hands cuffed to his seat, to face his latest sentencing for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 at his Manhattan apartment. Judge Curtis Farber handed down the 15-year prison term, which will be followed by five years of supervised release and a requirement that Weinstein register as a sex offender.

The courtroom proceeding brought back into focus the sweeping fallout of the #MeToo movement, which gained traction in 2017 after investigative reports detailed sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault allegations against the producer. More than 80 women have come forward with accusations against Weinstein over the years.

Courtroom Confrontation and Victim Impact Statements

During the hearing, Miriam Haley delivered a victim impact statement detailing the enduring professional and personal toll of the assault. She described how Weinstein abused his position and power and spoke about the intense scrutiny and public smear campaigns she endured over the past seven years, according to multiple outlet reports.

“Making the decision to speak up will have me looking over my shoulder for years to come. It’s a life sentence for me.”

Prosecution representatives had asked the court for a 20-year sentence accompanied by five years of post-release supervision, arguing that the defendant never showed any type of remorse for his crimes. Meanwhile, Weinstein’s defense team requested a nine-year term, citing deteriorating health conditions including heart disease and blood cancer.

When given the opportunity to speak, Weinstein maintained his innocence regarding the underlying accusations while offering a conditional apology. I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence, Weinstein told the court, adding that he lives with many regrets.

Judge Farber delivered a stern rebuke before issuing the sentence, telling the defendant that he threw away a legacy of greatness by taking what he wanted by force. You had it all, Farber stated from the bench.

The Six-Year Legal Odyssey and Overturned Convictions

Wednesday’s decision culminates a turbulent legal timeline that began with Weinstein’s 23-year prison sentence in 2020 after a Manhattan jury found him guilty of raping aspiring actor Jessica Mann and committing a criminal sexual act against Haley.

That initial conviction unraveled in 2024 when New York’s highest court overturned the verdict, ruling that the trial judge improperly allowed testimony from women who were not official plaintiffs in the case, thereby prejudicing the proceedings. Rather than letting the matter drop, prosecutors mounted a retrial in 2025.

The second New York trial resulted in a mixed verdict. While the 12-person jury convicted Weinstein once again on the criminal sexual act charge involving Haley, jurors acquitted him of a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. Deliberations regarding Jessica Mann resulted in a mistrial after a hung jury, and prosecutors ultimately declined to pursue a fourth trial after Mann indicated she could not endure further court appearances.

California Case Status and What Happens Next

Beyond his New York legal battles, Weinstein faces additional prison time on the West Coast. A Los Angeles jury found him guilty in December 2022 of rape and sexual assault arising from a 2013 incident involving an Italian actor and model. Although a California appeals court upheld that conviction in June, his original 16-year sentence was vacated, setting the stage for resentencing proceedings in Los Angeles.
