“For those who had cards with an electronic signature chip, if they apply before the end of this year, those cards will be replaced free of charge and they will not have to pay 10 euros. And if citizens apply before July 22 – until when those old signatures are valid – while waiting for a new card, it will be possible to use the old card. Everyone else does not need to change their card, Evelina Gudzinskaitė, head of the Migration Department, told LRT radio.
“We are only talking about those citizens who want to use their personal identity cards in order to be able to sign documents with an electronic signature,” added the head of the institution.
Portal lrytas.lt reminds that the cards need to be constantly changed due to the ever-updating and tightening requirements of the European Union for this technology.
Changing the personal identity card is relevant only for those citizens who use it for electronic signature. According to the Center for Issuing Personal Documents, there may be about 20,000 such residents.
Those who do not use the card to create a qualified electronic signature do not have to change it.
It is reminded that until 2022 September 2 the issued cards should have already been changed, because the electronic signature certificates on them are even older and residents were urged to change them until July of last year.
