Arsenal confidently reaches the round of 16 in the League Cup against a notable third-division team. Kai Havertz showcases his goal-scoring skills, and a new signing also finds the net. Liverpool also does not falter.

Thanks in part to substitute Kai Havertz, English football runner-up Arsenal has confidently reached the round of 16 in the League Cup. In the third round of the cup competition, the Gunners defeated third-division team Bolton Wanderers 5:1 (2:0) at home and remain in the title race. The London club last won the league cup in 1993.

Arsenal rested key players against the underdog, with team manager Mikel Arteta leaving out German international Havertz from the starting lineup. Declan Rice opened the scoring (16′), and then youngster Ethan Nwaneri scored twice (37’/49′). Aaron Collins reduced the deficit (53′), and new signing Raheem Sterling restored the original gap with his first goal in an Arsenal shirt (64′). Havertz came on for Rice in the 62nd minute and scored the final goal (78′).

Liverpool with goal fest despite deficit

Defending champion Liverpool is also through. The Reds defeated West Ham United 5:1 (1:1) on Wednesday night. After an own goal by Jarell Quansah (21′), Diogo Jota turned the game around (25’/49′).

Mohamed Salah marked the 3:1 (74′), then Edson Alvarez received a second yellow card for the Hammers (76′). Cody Gakpo added two more goals (90’/90’+3).

Hürzeler challenges Liverpool

Liverpool will face Brighton and Hove Albion in the round of 16 with German team manager Fabian Hürzeler. Arsenal will travel to Preston North End, and reigning champions Manchester City will play at Tottenham Hotspur.
