Honoring a Legacy: Dr. Donnis Thompson
The 40th edition of the tournament served as a tribute to Dr. Donnis Thompson, a pivotal figure in the history of University of Hawai’i athletics. Dr. Thompson is recognized as a pioneer for women’s sports at the university, and the invitational stands as a lasting testament to her contributions. The event’s anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on her impact and celebrate her commitment to creating opportunities for female athletes. According to The Golf Wire, the tournament also carried a deeper meaning this year, with players, coaches, and fans wearing pink ribbons in support of the late wife of Texas State head coach, Par Nilsson, who recently passed away from breast cancer.
Looking Ahead
Despite finishing behind several top-25 programs, the Rainbow Wahine gained valuable experience competing at home. The team will now prepare for the Ping ASU Tournament, scheduled for March 23-25 in Phoenix, Arizona. Following that, they will compete in the Substantial West Championship in April, which will be held at the Royal Kā’anapali Course in West Maui. The team hopes to build on the experience gained at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational as they continue their spring season.
The University of Hawai’i women’s golf team will continue to refine its game and prepare for the challenges ahead. Fans can follow the team’s progress and find updates on the Hawai’i Athletics website. The team’s performance at the Ping ASU Tournament will be a key indicator of their readiness for the Big West Championship, where they will aim to contend for the title.
