HBO Casts Lily, James Potter and Charlie Weasley for Harry Potter Series

HBO’s upcoming television series adaptation has cast Hannah Chinn and Jasper Talbot as Lily and James Potter, alongside Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley. The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026.

The Expansion of Season One With Charlie Weasley and the Potters

The television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s fantasy novels has added three key roles to its roster ahead of its Christmas Day debut. HBO confirmed that Hannah Chinn will play Lily Potter and Jasper Talbot will portray James Potter in Season 1. Alongside the young wizard’s parents, Harry Gilby joins the cast as Charlie Weasley, the second-eldest son of the Weasley family.

While James and Lily appear during key flashback and mirror sequences in the narrative—including Harry recognizing them in the Mirror of Erised during his fight against Voldemort—Charlie’s inclusion differs from the feature films. In the books, Charlie is a dragonologist working in Romania, but he was omitted from the original Warner Bros. movie adaptations.

Supporting cast members include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge.

A Timeline of Previous Adaptations and the Upcoming Television Reboot

In the cinematic adaptations, Daniel Radcliffe portrayed Harry Potter, with Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville playing James and Lily Potter. Secondary characters like Charlie Weasley were left off screen entirely.

The new television series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, who also serves as Season 1’s showrunner. Several episodes of the HBO series will be directed by Mark Mylod, who will also serve as an executive producer in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and Brontë Film and TV. The project’s executive producer lineup is rounded out by Jon Brown, Laura Neal, David Heyman of Heyday Films, and J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts representing Brontë Film and TV.

The teaching staff is populated by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Unresolved Questions Surrounding the Dark Lord and Series Continuity

Despite extensive casting announcements for both the inaugural and second seasons, the actor playing Voldemort at the end of the first season remains unannounced.

It remains unclear whether the actor cast for the final episodes of Season 1 will portray the antagonist throughout the entirety of the planned run, leaving a central role still under wraps as the December 25 premiere approaches.
