Vítkovice Riders are betting on a familiar core to revitalize their fortunes on the ice. The Czech Extraliga club has announced a new coaching staff comprised entirely of individuals with deep ties to the organization, signaling a commitment to club identity and a renewed push for success. Yorick Treille will take the helm as head coach, supported by assistants Pavel Trnka, Radek Philipp, and Luděk Krayzel, with Martin Prusek dedicated to developing the team’s goaltenders. This isn’t simply a collection of experienced hockey minds; it’s a homecoming for those who have bled blue and white, aiming to restore Vítkovice to its former glory. The appointment represents a significant shift towards leveraging institutional knowledge and fostering a strong sense of belonging within the team.
The decision to assemble a staff steeped in Vítkovice history is a deliberate one, according to club officials. The goal extends beyond simply improving the win-loss record; it’s about reshaping the team’s identity and instilling a fighting spirit that resonates with the passionate fanbase. The new coaches will collaborate closely with management on player personnel decisions, allowing them to focus on on-ice strategy and development. This collaborative approach, coupled with the coaches’ diverse experience – spanning international competitions, foreign leagues, and youth development – is intended to create a cohesive and dynamic program. The club is actively working on finalizing the roster for the upcoming season, with ongoing negotiations with players and agents. This new era for HC VÍTKOVICE RIDERA is built on a foundation of shared history and a collective ambition to compete at the highest level.
A Proven Leader: Yorick Treille’s Journey to Vítkovice
Yorick Treille, 45, is no stranger to Vítkovice fans. His two seasons with the club (2008-2010) were marked by grit and determination, culminating in a memorable run to the finals in 2010. He etched his name into club lore with a crucial goal in the quarterfinal series against Sparta Prague and opened the scoring in the home leg of the championship final against Pardubice. His playing career took him across Europe and North America, including 170 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and nine appearances with the French national team in the top division of the World Championships, plus four appearances in Division 1A.
Though, Treille’s recent success has come behind the bench. He began his coaching career with Mulhouse in France’s Ligue Magnus during the 2018/19 season, and quickly ascended to grow an assistant coach for the French national team. In 2019-2020, he led Mulhouse, earning the prestigious Camil Gélinas Trophy as the league’s best coach despite a season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. He then spent two seasons with the French national program, guiding the U20 team to promotion to the elite division. Most recently, Treille served as an assistant coach with Genève-Servette in Switzerland, contributing to their historic championship wins in the National League A (NLA) in 2023 and the Champions Hockey League in 2024 – a first for a Swiss club. He continues to lead the French national team, having guided them through four World Championships and the Olympic qualification tournament. His international experience and proven track record craft him a compelling choice to lead Vítkovice.
Building on a Legacy: The Supporting Staff
Treille won’t be alone in steering the ship. Pavel Trnka brings a wealth of experience, having been associated with Vítkovice since 2007, initially as a player and later as a coach and administrator. Remarkably, Trnka logged 415 NHL games with the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers, and represented the Czech Republic at the 2003 World Championships. He was also part of Vítkovice teams that reached the Extraliga finals in 2010 and 2011. Currently, Trnka is the head coach of Vítkovice’s youth program and has served as an assistant coach with the Czech junior national team for seven years, specializing in defensive play and penalty killing. In 2024, he helped the Czech junior team secure a silver medal at the World Championships.
Radek Philipp, a Vítkovice native and product of the club’s youth system, embodies the local connection the team is prioritizing. He spent seven seasons with Vítkovice, with a brief stint in Finland, before retiring with the club in 2016. Philipp also represented the Czech Republic internationally, including 24 appearances with the national team and participation in the Spengler Cup and Champions Hockey League. He previously served as an assistant coach with Vítkovice, contributing to their successful 2022-23 season and their run to the Champions Hockey League semifinals.
Luděk Krayzel, another Vítkovice icon, made over 300 appearances for the club during his playing career. He was a key member of the teams that won silver and bronze medals in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons, respectively. Krayzel transitioned into coaching after his playing days, starting in nearby Poruba before returning to Vítkovice to work with the youth academy. He has also served as the head coach of the VTM regional team.
Completing the staff is Martin Prusek, a legendary goaltender in Vítkovice history. A World Champion with the Czech Republic in 1999, Prusek spent years as the backbone of the Vítkovice net, earning the adoration of fans with his unique style and stellar performances. He also had a stint in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets, playing 58 games. Prusek has been dedicated to developing young goaltenders within the Vítkovice organization for over a decade and returns after a four-year period with Olomouc. He also has experience coaching at various levels of the Czech national team program.
The appointment of this entirely home-grown coaching staff signals a clear message: Vítkovice is looking inward to rediscover its winning formula. The focus will be on instilling a strong work ethic, a deep sense of pride, and a commitment to playing a fast, aggressive style of hockey. The team is expected to announce further details regarding player acquisitions and training camp schedules in the coming weeks. Fans can stay updated on the latest news and developments on the club’s official website.
The immediate task for Treille and his staff is to assess the current roster and identify areas for improvement. The Extraliga season is highly competitive, and Vítkovice will face tough challenges from established rivals. However, with a coaching staff that understands the club’s history and values, and a renewed commitment to developing local talent, the future looks promising for HC VÍTKOVICE RIDERA. The club’s next official announcement is expected to be regarding pre-season game scheduling, providing fans with their first opportunity to notice the new team in action.
