After an argument, a man used a machete to attack his partner, the victim was taken to the local health center due to the seriousness of the injuries.

The neighbors, upon observing the incident, detained the suspect and protected the victims while the agents of the National Civil Police (PNC) arrived. The authorities suspect that the alleged perpetrator was drunk; however, they clarified that the Public Ministry should investigate the incident.

Edwin Monroy, spokesman for the PNC, reported that the attack occurred on the night of Thursday, June 8, 2023, in the community of Telemán, Panzós; Alta Verapaz. “The detainee was identified as Hermelindo “N”, 33 years old,” explained the police spokesman.

According to the testimonies of neighbors, Hermelindo arrived at his residence and began to argue with his partner in front of his children. The assailant then began taking some of his family’s belongings and burned them in front of the residence.

The discussion became more and more violent, to the point that the suspect took his machete to injure his 27-year-old cohabitant. The neighbors upon realizing the incident alerted the Police and went to the residence to rescue the wife and children of the attacker. While the police arrived, the neighbors detained the attacker.

The firefighters who attended the emergency indicated that the victim with several injuries was transferred to a care center and confirmed that she is several months pregnant.

A similar event occurred in the village of San Francisco, San Miguel Chicaj, Baja Verapaz, early Thursday morning. In this incident the suspect was identified as 27-year-old Edy “N”.

According to the spokesperson, the suspect was arrested for assaulting two women, ages 29 and 49. “The detainee entered his home with a stick and a glass bottle to attack his ex-partner, who presented security measures in his favor,” Monroy said.
