Tito Jackson – the third of nine brothers – played guitar, sang and danced in homes around the world as the Jackson 5 became an international group in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with a string of hits which included four hits consecutive No. 1, including ‘Want You Back’ and ‘I’ll Be There’.
After a label change from Motown to Epic and a name change from the Jackson 5 to the Jacksons, the group re-entered the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Enjoy Yourself’ in 1976, ‘Take Yourself (Down to the Ground)’ in 1979 and finally, in 1984, ‘State of Shock’, a collaboration with Mick Jagger that was more of a project by Michael than a true band effort. In 1984 the group’s Victory Tour hit the stadiums, giving the brothers one last chance at superstardom, after the rise of ‘Thriller’ made it clear that Michael’s future was full time as a solo artist. Michael left the Jacksons at the end of that tour, taking most of the attention with him, but many changes the family members then continued to make and record on and off.
Tito – born Toriano Adaryll Jackson in Gary, Indiana, on October 15, 1953 – He was inducted with the rest of the Jackson 5 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Michael, who died in 2009, was the only member of the original line of five brothers who had preceded Tito into the afterlife. Tito released his first solo album only in 2016, ‘Tito Time’, which shows his love for the blues, a musical genre that he resumed and emphasized in the last part of his life, as we recalled by ‘Various’ magazine. In 2021 Tito released another blues album, ‘Under Your Spell’, and went on tour. The record featured guests such as Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Joe Bonamassa and his brother Marlon.
