He is a world-class star but there is a problem, reveals Irfan Pathan

by time news

Irfan Pathan feels that his son Shubman Gill cannot replace Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul as India’s Test opener. Currently, Gill, who has gained attention as the fifth Indian to score a century in all formats, is a reliable player for India in all formats.

Gill is part of the Indian squad for the four-match Test series against Australia. Gill was instrumental in India’s 168-run victory in the series-deciding final T20I against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 1/

During a discussion on Star Sports, Pathan was asked if Shubman Gill had cemented his place as an opener in all three formats. He replied in the negative and elaborated:

“Not in three formats, but in two formats. Talking about Test matches, you have two openers who scored runs in difficult conditions and scored runs in England and won matches for India there.”

The former Indian all-rounder feels that Gill’s impressive performances in the shorter formats will make it impossible for KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma to displace him in Test cricket.

“There’s KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, and suddenly Shubman Gill is scoring runs in the T20 format, you can’t let them play away. You need consistency.”
