American Senator Ben Carden called on the authorities to immediately release the imprisoned chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party and economist Gubad Ibadoglu.
“The politically motivated arrest of the Azerbaijani opposition leader and economist Gubad Ibadoglu by the Azerbaijani government increases the attention to the terrible stifling of independent voices in the country,” said X (former twitter).
In his post, the senator also commented on the fact that the economist scientist and his wife Irada Bayramova were subjected to physical pressure during detention.
“Not only has he been accused of false crimes, but we are hearing reports that he and his wife were severely beaten during their detention and denied medical care while in custody. I call for his immediate release,” Carden said.
* On July 24, the Narimanov District Court of Baku accused Gubad Ibadoglu of making counterfeit money and imprisoned him for 3 months and 26 days. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan said that G. Ibadoglu is related to the supporters of Fethullah Gülen, who was accused of attempting a coup in Turkey in 2016.
Gubad Ibadoglu rejects the accusations as absurd. Many international organizations and officials called on official Baku to release the politician immediately.
