As Ž. Mauricas writes on Facebook, Lithuania’s economy in 2024 returned to the growth path at the beginning. Lithuania’s annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first quarter of the year reached 2.9 percent. This is faster growth than in other Baltic countries. In Latvia, GDP grew by 0.9 percent, in Estonia it contracted by 2.1 percent. At that time, the entire European Union (EU) grew by 0.6 percent.
“It is interesting that there are only three countries in the entire EU with a positive consumer confidence index: Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. It is also interesting that the consumer confidence index in Lithuania has grown almost the most in the EU over the past two years: in June 2022 it reached -10.9, in June 2023 -2.8, and in June 2024 +6.6 ” – compared the economist.
At the beginning of the summer, Lithuanians were happier than they were now only twice: in June 2019 (+7.8%) and in June 2007 (+10.8%), Ž. Mauricas calculated.
According to him, the high confidence rate of Lithuanians can be explained. This was caused not only by the relatively good economic situation of the country, but also by unprecedented shocks: the coronavirus pandemic, the inflation jump, the rise in interest rates, the migrant crisis, etc. However, it did not have as big an impact as expected.
“As they say, happiness is the difference between expectations and reality, so when the worst scenarios did not come true, the happiness of Lithuanians increased”, reminded Ž. Mauricas.
