Pelosi attackers charged!

It was a brutal attack on Paul Pelosi (82), the husband of top US politician Nancy Pelosi (82) last week.

Now the attacker, David DePape (42), has been charged at the state level.

︎ He is charged with “attempted kidnapping of a US official in the performance of his official duties,” according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California.

► He was also charged with intent to attack an immediate family member of a US official, according to US news channel CNN. The two charges carry maximum sentences of 20 years for attempted kidnapping and 30 years for assault.

DePape faces additional charges at the state level in addition to these state-level charges. Local reports said he was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.

Rückblick: DePape gained access to the House of Representatives Speaker’s home in San Francisco on Friday night (local time) – and met her husband Paul (82). He yelled, according to CNN, “Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?” After a heated exchange, he hit Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

DePape told police following the shooting that he wanted to hold the Speaker hostage and “break her kneecaps,” authorities said Monday.

The attacker spread right-wing extremist views and various conspiracy theories on Facebook – including that the Democrats had manipulated the last presidential election and that Donald Trump was the “rightful” President of the United States.

︎ Nancy Pelosi herself was not in the Californian city at the time of the burglary: According to the Capitol Police, President Joe Biden’s party friend (79) was in the capital Washington. The burglary happened about a week and a half before the midterm congressional elections on November 8th.

The constituency of Speakers of the House of Representatives, whose constituency is in San Francisco, is one of the most powerful politicians in the United States. In her position as “Speaker of the House” she is by protocol number three in the state after President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
