It is a figure of the Red Star who passed away this Tuesday. The National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) announced the death of Patrice Lecornu, at the age of 65. This former international player (3 caps) had worn several hats: those of player then coach, training director and technical director.

Born in Flers (Orne), this winger was forced to end his playing career due to a persistent knee injury at the age of 27. Between 1976 and 1985, he played 9 professional seasons at Red Star (D2, between 1976 and 1978), Angers (1978-1981) and Nantes (1981-1984). His performances earned him selection for the French team three times between 1979 and 1981.

Victim of a car accident in 1983, Patrice Lecornu ended his career at Red Star the following season. It was within the Seine-Saint-Denis team that he began his coaching career. First with the reserve team then as assistant to Philippe Troussier from 1987 to 1989 before becoming number one coach during the 1989-1990 season.

In 1992, he became director of the Audon club’s training center. A position he held until 2000. Future internationals Steve Marlet (23 caps for the French team) and Khalilou Fadiga (37 caps with the Senegal selection) left the Ile-de-France club during this period.

In 2000, Patrice Lecornu held the same position at PSG for 5 years. Since then, he had been technical manager of Paris FC then technical director of Red Star.

The former Malian international, Fousseni Diawara, trained at Red Star and notably spent with AS Saint-Étienne, reacted on X (ex-Twitter). “My deepest condolences to his family. Patrice was much more than a trainer, he was a mentor and a source of inspiration to all of us at Red Star. His legacy will live on through the players he developed and the memories he created. Thank you for everything Patrice. »

Reached by telephone, Steve Marlet remembers with emotion one of his first coaches. “We were proud of him. He was a model for us because he had played in Nantes and in the French team, confides the current advisor to the president of Red Star. I remember his perfect human management. We won a lot of matches with him. »
