The revelations about Surovikin are incessant, from many sides and should be taken with caution. The latest claims that he was a secret member of Wagner. You revealed it to CNN the Russian investigative center Dossier Center. The documents supplied to the broadcaster show the presence of the general, identified with a sort of serial number, together with a group of 30 officers. A nucleus with two “hats” and a double loyalty: on one side the Army, on the other the security company.
An indiscretion to push Surovikin more and more alongside Prigozhin: not only a good friend, linked by a great understanding, but an integral part of the system led by the “chef”. And this can fuel suspicions of active participation in the uprising.
Hence the arrest of the officer or the preventive detention in a guarded residence waiting for the investigators to finish the investigation on him and other members of the “conspiracy”. At the moment, however, there is no confirmation of the detention and her daughter has denied it, claiming that “everything is in order”.
Surovikin’s fate has been spoken of by one who is usually not very talkative, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence Budanov. In an interview with the War Zone website, he underlined five points: 1) We too knew about Prigozhin’s projects thanks to the information gleaned from “human” sources. He spies real and not wiretaps. 2) We do not have accurate data on the general. 3) The Russian secret service is ready to take him out but this will come at the right time. 4) We are not afraid that Wagner will open a front in Belarus, their eventual presence will be logistical. 5) Mercenaries were the most feared adversary because they were better prepared than regular soldiers.
The observations of the protagonists are intertwined with the evaluations of the Kremlinologists, always cautious. In his challenge Prigozhin may have sought shores in officers sidelined or downsized in their careers. The “chef” – writes Mikhail Komin – well before the mutiny wanted to replace Minister Shoigu with Mikhail Mizintsev, known as the executioner of Mariupol and with important positions in the system, while Surovikin should have taken the place of the Chief of General Staff Gerasimov.
Only Mizintsev was dethroned, ousted from the defense and moved into the ranks of Wagner. There is no doubt that due to his past role in the hierarchies, he has maintained a certain influence and contacts. Same thing for Surovikin, with a successful path behind him. Characteristics of alternative characters to an unloved leadership but functional to Putin’s needs. They are useful analyses, attempts to offer a “map” of a story where we see only one side and we are not even sure if it is the most well-founded one.
