The head of Iranian diplomacy said, this Friday (18), that he had had a “direct, frank and productive” conversation with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia on his first visit to this kingdom after the rapprochement between the two rival powers.

“In the morning, I had a 90-minute meeting with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, in Jeddah,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

Both had “a direct, frank and productive discussion based on the good neighbor policy” and reaffirmed the importance “of stable bilateral relations”, he added.

Upon arriving in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, on the eve, the minister said that the growing cooperation between the two countries will allow “the unity of the Muslim world” after years of disputes over various regional issues.

Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, said late on Friday that the crown prince had been invited to visit the Islamic Republic and that he had accepted.

The powerful Saudi prince, known as MBS, effectively leads the rich oil kingdom due to the illness and advanced age of his father, King Salman.

The resumption of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia raises hopes for peace in the Middle East, although outside observers warn that the main points of contention between the two countries are far from being resolved.
