Heads of state and government discuss the climate crisis

by time news

Six weeks before the UN climate conference in Glasgow and directly before the UN general debate in New York, a meeting of heads of state and government on the climate crisis will take place on Monday. The talks will be led by UN Secretary General António Guterres and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whose country will host the World Climate Conference from October 31.

In order to enable an open dialogue, the two-hour talks take place behind closed doors. The heads of state and government want to coordinate which additional measures are necessary to achieve the 1.5 degree target in the Paris climate agreement. Measures to adapt to global warming and climate finance are also on the program. A UN report published on Friday sees the earth without a radical change in direction on the dangerous path of warming by 2.7 degrees compared to the pre-industrial age.

The opening of the general debate at the 76th UN General Assembly will take place on Tuesday. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen traveled to New York on Sunday. Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (both ÖVP) will follow on Monday.
