Health Alert: Hepatitis A Case at Asbury Park Restaurant – Precautions Urged

by time news

Employee at Asbury Park Restaurant Tests Positive for Hepatitis A

An employee of Cardinal Provisions, a popular brunch spot located on Bangs Avenue in Asbury Park, has tested positive for Hepatitis A. The Monmouth County Health Department has released a statement urging anyone who dined at the restaurant to be cautious.

According to the department’s investigation, the infected employee worked at the restaurant while infectious on multiple dates, including September 7-10, 12, 14, 17, 19, and 21. The health department conducted an inspection of the eatery and found no evidence of food safety violations. However, as a precaution, the restaurant voluntarily closed its doors until all exposed employees were vaccinated.

In light of the situation, the county is advising anyone who dined at Cardinal Provisions on any of the dates mentioned to consider receiving a vaccination within two weeks from the last date of exposure. Individuals are also advised to monitor their health for symptoms of Hepatitis A infection for up to 50 days after exposure. The health department recommends frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and warm water, especially after using the bathroom and before preparing food. Anyone experiencing symptoms is urged to stay home and consult a doctor.

While the transmission of Hepatitis A from an infected food handler to patrons is uncommon, it is still possible to contract the virus through ingestion of contaminated food and water or direct contact with an infectious person.

County officials have stated that Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver and can cause symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, fever, stomach pain, brown-colored urine, and light-colored stools. Yellowing of the skin or eyes may also occur. It is important to note that people can become ill up to seven weeks after being exposed to the virus.

The Monmouth County Health Department is working closely with Cardinal Provisions to ensure necessary precautions are taken to prevent further transmission of the virus. They encourage anyone with concerns or questions to reach out to them directly.
