Probably my biggest hesitation is, my chequebook isn’t quite big enough yet, Hill said. Raymond Phillips, a farmer in Alberta, echoed the sentiment, noting that beyond the initial purchase price, farmers must also account for a mixing system, generator, and pilot’s license. There’s lots of pieces to the puzzle, he said.

Operational costs, however, are lower. Drones cost about 83 cents per acre to operate, compared to $10.50 for high-clearance ground sprayers. Katelyn Haskey, a Saskatchewan farmer, argued that the long-term savings could justify the expense. If you go buy your own (drone), it’ll pay off in the end, she said, though she admitted the upfront cost remains daunting.

Industry Response and Future Outlook

Farmers like Curtis Sutter, who recently purchased a T100 model in Alberta, are optimistic. It’s all mostly automated, he said, comparing the process to learning to drive a traditional sprayer. However, not all farmers are convinced. James Flowerday, a Saskatchewan farmer, estimated that smaller drones could take three times longer to cover the same area as conventional sprayers, questioning their efficiency for large-scale operations.

The regulatory shift has also drawn attention from policymakers. In Prince Edward Island, where drone use was legalized in May 2026, Fraser Cameron of the provincial pesticide management program highlighted the potential to reduce pesticide waste and soil compaction. The goal is to reduce pesticide usage, he said, noting that drones allow for targeted application rather than blanket spraying.

Regional Variations in Implementation

Implementation varies by region. While Health Canada’s policy applies nationwide, provincial regulations add complexity. In P.E.I., for example, drones are limited to 150 kilograms and cannot operate in winds over 20 km/h.
