The revival of health education as a separate subject has been talked about for almost two decades (it was abolished in 2005), but nothing changes, and as the students themselves admit, they mostly learn information about various health issues on social media, not in lessons.

A 2022 study by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) shows that only a quarter of teenage boys and less than a fifth of girls say their health is excellent. The most common problems are back pain and difficulty falling asleep. The ever-increasing use of medication, for example for headaches, is also worrying. As in the rest of the world, more and more children in Latvia are overweight and obese: statistics show that 30% of 11-year-old boys are overweight and obese, while this figure is lower for girls – 21%. Since 2002, the number of children who eat breakfast in the morning has decreased by 20% – currently only half do so.
