Although the two appear together at public events from time to time, they generally keep their relationship private. Now the health minister has given a rare insight into his love life.
Besides his professional commitments, he has little time, but “I try my best. Of course. There’s no question about that,” the 61-year-old said in an interview with “Bild”. Fortunately, Elisabeth Niejahr “has a lot of understanding for the time constraints, and we knew each other for a long time before we became a couple,” said the politician. In addition, his partner, who is “very successful as the head of a large foundation,” is also fully occupied with her career.
His role as a father is also sometimes neglected because of his job. “I have little time and I don’t have contact with all the children anymore, I have to say. That has to do with how the marriage fell apart. But I try to spend the time I have with the children,” says Karl Lauterbach. The politician has five children. Four are from his marriage to epidemiologist and doctor Angela Spelsberg. Another is from his relationship with journalist Ulrike Winkelmann.
He will soon be going on holiday with two of his daughters. “We have done that in recent years too,” says the Health Minister. “This time we are going to the South of France. Last year we were in Italy.” His partner will not be there, but “we are both going away again afterwards,” says Karl Lauterbach.
