Skin cancer screening before lunch break: Many employees can take advantage of health services at work. But one in five do without. Why?

“The company doctor is in the building”: Many employees are familiar with emails with this or a similar subject from their everyday working lives. In a YouGov survey commissioned by the SBK Siemens company health insurance fund, 77 percent of respondents stated that there are health services available at their workplace.

The offers are diverse. The most common health offer that employees report is vaccinations. 49 percent of those surveyed said that they can get immunized against flu or corona at their workplace. 27 percent of those surveyed have already taken advantage of this offer.

44 percent of respondents have the opportunity to have vision tests and eye examinations done at work. In third place are exercise opportunities: 43 percent report that they can take advantage of active breaks, after-work sports or discounted gym memberships.

Also common are aids to strengthen mental health, such as mindfulness training (40 percent), back training (39 percent) or medical check-ups such as heart checks (34 percent). Around a quarter (27 percent) have the opportunity to attend cancer prevention appointments such as skin cancer screening at work.

But 19 percent of employed people who have access to at least one such offer do not take advantage of it. They were asked what it would take to change this.

One factor is that the appointment times sometimes don’t fit well: 37 percent said they would use the health services if there was more flexibility in terms of time. 32 percent would like their employer to make it clear that eye tests and the like can be done during working hours. And 29 percent are not satisfied with the services themselves.

For the survey, the YouGov Institute interviewed a total of 1,055 employed people between June 28 and July 1, 2024.
