The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps) has withdrawn from the market a batch of an antibiotic made from benzathine benzylpenicillin. Specifically, according to the health alert issued, it is Benzetacil 2,400,000 IU, in powder and solvent format for injectable suspension.

Specifically, they have withdrawn lot T008, with an expiration date of December 31, 2026. The reason for the withdrawal is that, by mistake, the medicine has been packaged in the wrong box: Benzetacil 1,200,000 IU.

Thus, the Aemps alert orders the “withdrawal from the market of all the units distributed from the affected batches and their return to the laboratory through the usual channels”, although they clarify that it is a quality defect that “does not pose a vital risk to the patient”.

According to the package insert, this medication is used to treat infections such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, or syphilis.
