Healthcare, 6.1% of Italian families are in serious difficulty. Data on drug-related poverty
The public health is increasingly in difficulty, the progressive cuts by various governments and the Covid emergency have created a huge difference between those who can afford medical care and those who are increasingly forced to give it up due to lack of funds. That the inequalities in healthcare are growing mainly due to the obstacle of waiting lists, insurmountable – we read in La Stampa – for those who do not have the possibility of bypassing them by paying, this is confirmed by the still unpublished data of Annual report of Crea Sanità, soon to be presented. The families who suffered economic hardship due to healthcare costs were 4.7% in 2019, rose to 5.2% in 2020, to now reach 6.1%, a percentage which in absolute numbers is one million and 580 thousand families. That things are going from bad to worse – continues La Stampa – is also reported the 11th Poverty Report sanitary presented last month by Pharmaceutical counter, which in the first 10 months of 2023 counted 427 thousand Italians in conditions of health poverty and who for this reason had to turn to non-profit organizations, now a fifth of the country’s health facilities. Just a year earlier a ask for help they had been 386 thousand assistedwhich in just one year is therefore increased by 10.6%. But let’s not deceive the data, because the South is actually doubly disadvantaged, having more people in difficulty economic and fewer voluntary structures that provide a response to their needs.
