Dhe bathing-loving girlfriends are happy: the car park at the bathing lake still has a few gaps, and there is even a spot under a shady tree. The hours by the water fly by, and when the sun is lower, it’s time to head home. In the parking lot, it becomes apparent that the course of the sun has also made itself felt here. The car is no longer in the shade of cooling leaves, but is exposed to direct radiation.
“It’s a good thing that we packed the chocolate in the bathing bag after all,” the driver thinks and opens all the doors. But the dark seats are glowing and you almost burn your fingers on the steering wheel. The first thing to think about is driving off.
It can quickly become oven hot in the car if it is left in the sun for too long.

“A newspaper will do, too!”
The damp towels help on the seats, and after a while the wet bathing suit has cooled the steering wheel to a tolerable level. But otherwise all surfaces still radiate a lot of heat, and the sunglasses lying on the dashboard cannot be used for the time being. “I guess I have to buy a silvery protective mat like almost everyone here has,” says the driver.
“You don’t need it,” says the girlfriend: “A newspaper would do, too!” On the next trip we have a copy from the day before and spread the pages generously from the cockpit to the parcel shelf, clamp them in the side windows and behind the sun visor and put them quickly find the local and business sections on the seats.
Now nothing stands in the way of bathing fun and a drive home without waiting. And indeed, in the afternoon the car is not as cool as if it had been in the shade. But the seats and steering wheel are perfectly usable, and the sunglasses didn’t get too much heat under the newspaper cover either.
Since then there has always been an old newspaper in the car. Because even if the heat wave is about to end, it can still get hot in the car. And if the long-awaited rain finally comes, you can stuff your damp shoes with the paper.
