More than 23 million French people now on orange alert. Due to the high temperatures and the heat wave, Météo France has decided to place 50 departments on heat wave alert for this Monday, one more than this Sunday. In fact, Charente-Maritime is added.

This Sunday, at the start of the afternoon, the temperature had already exceeded 40°C in several departments: Hérault, Aude, Vaucluse, Gard… Monthly records should be broken. “A lasting and intense heat wave for the period has settled over the country. Maximum temperatures are observed between 35 and 39 degrees in the departments in orange vigilance, up to 41 degrees at the peak”, notes, at 4 p.m., Météo France.

“The heat wave peak is expected between Tuesday and Wednesday”, underlines Météo-France which specifies that “absolute records” of temperature “are likely to be beaten, in particular Tuesday towards the Rhone valley, with 40 to 42 degrees expected”. On Monday, temperatures most often comparable to the day before, or even very slightly higher, are expected. it should be noted that the minimums will increase significantly over the Mediterranean midday with sometimes values ​​not falling below 26 to 27°c during the night from Sunday to Monday.

In the South-East, we noted, this Sunday, up to 41.3°C in Cadenet (84), 40.8°C in Nîmes-Courbessac (30), 41°C in Trets (13), 41.3°C in Moulès -et-Baucels (34) and 41.1°C in Durban-Corbières (11). In Drôme and Ardèche, temperatures range between 38 and 40°C, locally more, as in Saint-Laurent-du-Pape (07) where the monthly record for the month of August, of 41°C , is equal.

The heat wave extended its stifling hold on Sunday, a large half of southern France and 49 departments against 28 the day before experiencing abnormally high temperatures in the morning while many motorists were still on their way back from vacation.

From 5 a.m., Météo France recorded an exceptional 27°C in Nice, 24°C in Lyon and Perpignan, or even 23°C in Marseille or Toulouse and the mercury should reach during the day between 35 to 38°C “on a large southern and eastern part of the country”.

These very high temperatures will continue until the middle of next week. then, a drop in temperatures is expected from Thursday or even Friday. On the scale of France, this episode is the hottest of the summer of 2023, also one of the latest with such a level of intensity.
