Heavy Corona can lead to schizophrenia

by time news

People who have had severe Corona have a higher risk of schizophrenia. So say researchers at George Mason University in the US after analyzing health statistics. People who have been hospitalized with Covid have an 11 percent higher chance of developing this brain disorder.

Schizophrenia is associated with psychosis. At that moment you see, hear or feel things that are not there.

The scientists looked at 122,616 cases of SARS, 32,519 cases of Covid-19 and 53,386 recent cases of schizophrenia. There was a considerable overlap between the last two diseases. Further research showed that there was a causal link between the two, Corona really does increase the risk of delusions.

Corona is known to affect the brain. Scientists have previously seen that severe cases develop dementia more often. Young people are also susceptible to brain problems after a heavy infection. Mason’s scientists now want to investigate further how the link with schizophrenia works.
