Heavy oil tanker truck explodes in Haiti, killing at least 75

The Prime Minister of Haiti Ariel Henry has said that the explosion of a Haiti oil tanker truck was a national disaster.

Haiti, in the Caribbean, is facing severe shortages of fuel, including kerosene and cooking gas.

Meanwhile, a tanker truck carrying kerosene crashed in the northern city of Cape Hayden. When the locals saw the petrol coming out of it, they poured it into containers.

Then the tanker truck exploded due to an unexpected fire. Of these, 54 died in the blaze. Initial reports said more than 100 people were injured.

This accident was a national disaster. Prime Minister Ariel Henry has announced a three-day nationwide mourning period to pay tribute to the dead.

Cape Hayden Deputy Mayor Patrick Almonar said the death toll from the crash could rise further.

Meanwhile, several people who were injured and receiving treatment in the Haiti oil tanker explosion died. The death toll has risen to 75. Rescuers said 20 buildings were damaged in the area.
