Heavy Rain Prompts Flood Watch in Maine

Maine is bracing for heavy rainfall on Sunday, with the National Weather Service issuing a flood watch for the entire state until late Sunday night. The forecast calls for significant downpours, with rainfall rates of 1 inch in 30 minutes possible.

According to the National Weather Service, Greater Bangor is expected to receive up to 2 inches of rain, while Down East Maine, including Bar Harbor and Eastport, may see up to 2 inches as well. Further north, areas such as Ashland, Caribou, Fort Kent, and Presque Isle are expected to receive half an inch to an inch of rain, while Van Buren may see up to 1.5 inches.

Forecasters have warned that thunderstorms could intensify the rainfall, with as much as an inch of rain falling within 30-minute intervals. This heavy rain increases the risk of flooding across the state, with the weather service advising that creeks, streams, and low-lying areas may experience excessive runoff.

The possibility of flooding in Maine comes after historic flooding in parts of Vermont last week, which resulted in at least one death. The state capital of Montpelier experienced two months’ worth of rain in just two days.

As Maine prepares for the heavy rain, residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
