Saudi Arabia and Yemen witnessed unprecedented heavy rains that caused a wave of floods and torrential rains concentrated in Sanaa and Medina.

In Yemen, heavy rains fell on Zabid District in Al Hudaydah Governorate, amid conflicting reports about the death toll, which reached 84 people in Al Hudaydah Governorate and its countryside, most of them from Zabid District, during the past hours.

“Twenty-eight houses were completely destroyed and 271 houses were partially destroyed in the governorate’s districts,” said Dhamar Governor’s Deputy and Emergency Committee Chairman Ahmed Ali Al-Dhorani. “145 roads were cut off, rockslides affected 19 locations, dams cracked in Al-Hada and Jabal Al-Sharq districts, and cars were swept away in Dhamar city and Jabal Al-Sharq,” he added.

He continued: “Rapid response efforts are continuing to assess the damage, despite the difficulty of reaching a number of affected sites due to road closures that have hindered movement, in addition to heavy rains.”

Al-Dhorani stressed that the top priorities for those affected were identified, namely food, shelter and protection, while the need now is to purify the water in the contaminated wells and provide water treatment materials.

On Friday night, Medina, Saudi Arabia, witnessed heavy rains that caused unprecedented floods, described as historic.

Videos posted on social media showed floods sweeping away cars in several streets.

Video clips showed scenes of heavy rain falling on the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

The National Center of Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued a warning on Friday regarding rain and flash floods in Medina.
