Heavy rains cause flooding in South Florida

by time news

The Miami National Weather Service listed the event as historic.

The torrential rains that have fallen on South Florida (USA) since last Sunday have caused flooding, havoc in many neighborhoods, road closures and, yesterday Wednesday, the cancellation of flights at the Fort Lauderdale airport, a city affected by a warning twister.

In southeastern Broward County, where the aforementioned city is located, north of Miami, up to 30 centimeters of rain were recorded, forcing the closure of the international airport and several highways.

The heavy rainfall, accompanied by intense gusts of wind, caused at least three tornado warnings in parts of South Florida and flash flooding in the Miami metropolitan area as well.

The National Weather Service issued a “flood watch” on Thursday for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties, where many areas are “saturated” due to heavy rains that have been falling for three days.

Experts expect the rains to move to the north of the state tonight.

Florida: Emergency due to heavy rains in Fort Lauderdale

The Miami National Weather Service listed the event as historic. The rains sparked a flash flood emergency in Broward County with a mayor calling the deluge “the most severe flooding I’ve ever seen.”

Between 350 and 500 millimeters of rain flooded the Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area, according to an update Thursday morning from the National Weather Service office in Miami.

“Although the heavy rains have ended, several roads remain closed,” the weather service said, adding that the flooding is expected to persist.

“State climatologists will be on site today to examine the rainfall data and determine if any records have been broken for the state of Florida,” Miami Weather Service Meteorologist Luke Culver told CNN.
