Widespread rains in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry due to atmospheric circulation. The northeast monsoon is currently intensifying.

Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Tenkasi districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains today due to the prevailing atmospheric circulation in the Kumari Sea and adjoining Sri Lankan seas. The Met Office has forecast heavy showers in a few places and moderate showers in other districts and most parts of Pondicherry and Karaikal.

In this context, heavy rains lashed various districts including Chennai last night. Heavy rains have lashed Chennai Nungambakkam, Coimbatore, Kodambakkam, Porur and Mylapore and suburbs of Tambaram, Pallavaram, Meenambakkam, Ambattur and Poonamallee since last night.

Traffic has been diverted at several places in Chennai due to waterlogged roads and floods. Accordingly, traffic has been banned on the Rangarajapuram two-wheeler tunnel and The Nagar Madley tunnel.

Also on KK Nagar Rajamannar Road, traffic was blocked due to water logging and diverted to Second Avenue. Traffic was blocked on Valasaravakkam Road due to water logging and diverted to Kesavarthini Road to go to Arcot Road. Traffic has been blocked from Vani Mahal to Benz Park due to stagnant water and it has been diverted to Abibullah Road and Road.

Chennai City Rainwater Drainage Board Rehabilitation work is being carried out on Anna Main Road. Similarly, only heavy vehicles heading towards Anna Main Road from Kasi Point at Uthayam Junction will be diverted towards Ashok Pillar. Traffic has been banned up to Medavakkam Cholinganallur. Instead they are diverted to Cholinganallur via Kamatchi Hospital.

Flooded streets

There are more than 1 lakh streets in Chennai. 500 low-lying streets were flooded. Corporation employees, officials and police are involved in draining water from these places. The rain water is stagnant again in the places where the last rain flooded.

Following this, the Chennai Corporation is taking various measures to prevent the rains from flooding again. Chennai Corporation Commissioner Kagandeep Singh Bedi has advised the authorities to maintain the drains properly as the inspection work is already underway.
