Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains will continue in the state today. It will rain heavily in the afternoon. Yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Malappuram districts. The ban on fishing also continues. The Met Office has forecast that the rains will weaken by another day.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed Kuttanad yesterday. A 600-acre field in Kuttanad Kainakari C block, which was to be harvested this week, was destroyed by the landslide. Farmers say they have lost millions. Other fields in Kuttanad and Upper Kuttanad are also at risk of landslides as the summer rains do not change.

Meanwhile, the roof of the 40-year-old building of the Kozhikode Thottumukkam Government UP School collapsed in the rain yesterday. The school was closed and a major disaster was averted. The accident happened in a class of LKG students.

Thiruvananthapuram received good rainfall in both urban and rural areas. Idukki is likely to receive heavy rainfall. The cyclone is currently off the coast of Kerala causing heavy rainfall. The current observation is that the rains will weaken after Friday if it moves away from the Kerala coast.

However, the cyclone is likely to strengthen and move north. If so, heavy rains are expected in the northern districts in the coming days. The ban on fishing off the coast of Kerala continues.
