Cameron Diaz on her friend Drew Barrymore’s addiction: “It was hard”

Today, Drew Barrymore seems to be in a great place – she hosts a talk show, which was recently renewed for a fourth season, she is sober, she is raising her children and she has close friends. Friends also include actress Cameron Diaz, who stood by her when things weren’t so good and Drew battled her addiction to alcohol and drugs.
Now, Cameron Diaz is speaking openly for the first time about the problems of her old friend who struggled with alcohol abuse, and tells how she supported her during that time. Barrymore developed a drinking problem at only age 11, and became addicted to cocaine at age 12. In addition, she entered rehab following a suicide attempt at age 13. Over the years, she worked hard to get clean, but when her third marriage failed in 2016, she fell again.
The separation came after the actress decided to put her career on hold and move to New York with her husband to raise their daughters – Olive (10) and Frankie (8) – near his family. But when the relationship didn’t work out, Barrymore turned to alcohol, causing her longtime agent to drop her as a client and alienating her from several good friends.
“It was hard to watch. But I knew that if we all stayed with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way. I have complete faith in her. You can’t even understand how hard it was to be her as a child,” Cameron says for the first time.
Barrymore and Diaz starred together in the 2000 classic Charlie’s Angels, and have been good friends since the 90s. Barrymore talked about her sobriety journey and the addiction problems she went through on her show, and even admitted that the offer she received from the CBS network in 2019 to host her own talk show pushed her to make a real change in her life. “I think the opportunity to appear on a show like this really lit something up in me, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to do it if I wasn’t in a better place with myself,” Barrymore said at the time.
