Documenting the drama at Walmart: Police shot dead a woman who was holding a worker hostage

A 21-year-old woman entered the branch in Richland and pressed a gun to the back of one of the employees, and demanded: “Bring me a news anchor here.” After some time, she was shot dead by police forces

Mississippi police shot and killed a woman who entered a Walmart branch and took one of the workers hostage, in a particularly tense incident caught on camera.

21-year-old Corlonda McGinister entered the Walmart branch in Richland armed with a gun, which he pointed at one of the workers and took her hostage. When the police arrived at the scene, around 5:45 in the afternoon, the suspect had a strange request – to speak to a news anchor.

Documents published on the various social networks showed McGinister pointing the weapon behind the worker, who stood frozen in place. Then she is heard saying: “Hey, get me a news anchor here, right now. I need help, get me a news anchor here.”

The suspect went on to say that she had no intention of harming anyone, but she refused to release the employee. “I’m not trying to hurt anyone… get me a news anchor,” she said.

Later in the footage, you can see police demanding that she leave the gun, but McGinister continues to insist on having a media person.

After some time of trying to negotiate with the woman, at some point the police shot the suspect dead. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.

Richland Police Chief Nick McClendon told WAPT news that the tense incident was “devastating for all parties involved, the officers and anyone involved in this situation.” He added: “You know, the Christmas season is upon us, and mental health is still a big deal because of the stress of the holiday season.”
