Get to know: this is the diet that will delay the aging of the brain. Here are all the details

A new study joined forces for one of the longest and largest brain MRI trials in the world and found that a green Mediterranean diet may slow the natural age-related degeneration of the brain. The research findings revealed that for every percentage drop in the subjects’ body mass index, their brain age decreased by nine months

A green Mediterranean diet, rich in polyphenols and low in red and processed meat, may slow down age-related brain degeneration, here’s what the new study found:

Researchers recruited 102 volunteers suffering from obesity, most of whom were men and 52 years old on average. They were asked to follow a ‘green’ Mediterranean diet for 18 months, which included consuming 28g of walnuts daily, three to four cups of green tea and 100g of a green smoothie made from Globosa – a type of herbal supplement. They were also told to cut back on eating red meat and sweets.

Women were asked to consume no more than 1,200 to 1,400 calories a day, while men stuck to between 1,500 and 1,800 calories a day. Brain scans were completed at the start and end of the experiment to calculate ‘brain age’ – unrelated to biological age. During the study, all participants received a free gym membership and educational sessions encouraging moderate-intensity physical activity. They were also asked to participate in 45- to 60-minute sessions of cardio and resistance training three or four times a week. Body weight and waist circumference of the participants were also measured.

The researchers said that 56.8 percent of those who followed the green Mediterranean diet had a lower-than-expected brain age at the end of the study. They observed that every one percent decrease in BMI or weight correlated with a nine-month decrease in brain age.

The study’s author said: “Our study highlights the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including lower consumption of processed foods, sweets and drinks, in maintaining brain health. We were encouraged to find that even a 1 percent weight loss was enough to affect brain health and lead to a 9-month reduction At the age of the brain”.

However, the scientists did not investigate whether the decline in brain age affected the participants’ cognition. They noted that the findings are also limited due to the majority of participants being men and the lack of a control group to compare the findings to.
