Iranian actress Zar Amir: “Now that I’m not in Iran, I can enjoy my freedom”
The TV star and actress was one of Iran’s favorite anchors, until an intimate video of her was circulated online and she was forced to leave the country. Now, after picking up the actress award at Cannes for her role in the film “Holy Spider”, she returns to the situation in her hometown, and explains what is important to her in the film in which she agreed to take part
“Holy Spider” is a horror thriller screened at the last Cannes Film Festival, and it deals with a true story about a serial killer of women in Iran. The plot goes through the point of view of a brave female journalist who is determined to fight against opacity and governance. Now, the film is nominated for the foreign Oscar and according to reports, its chances of reaching the ceremony are definitely high.
“I’m sure that all the people who attacked us after the film didn’t even watch it. This also includes the minister of Iran who said that we are bad and should be punished,” explains the 41-year-old actress. She also explains that before she won the coveted award, no one really commented on the film. “There were no publications, reviews, attacks. “How I received the award – everything exploded,” she said.
“I have never seen myself as a victim, I have always worked very hard. When I lived in Iran I had to be careful because of my family, I avoided all contact with the media, and sometimes I even had to give up positions that interested me. The situation in Iran is really terrible,” she reveals. Ibrahimi is expected to star in another film that deals with a similar topic, centered on a mother and daughter seeking refuge from persecution in their country, Iran.
“Now that I no longer live in Iran, I can enjoy my freedom. I am an international person. Now, what is important to me is to choose only projects that speak to me. What is important to me is the subject of the film, what motivates it, and of course the director and the actors,” she concluded.
