The FDA is likely to grant the approval as early as Thursday, and a crucial meeting of the CDC committee is expected the next day. This means that already on Saturday tens of millions of Americans will be able to get vaccinated in the booster, which is just available in some countries

According to reports, a special committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to convene the next day (Thursday), and the next day a meeting of the corresponding committee has been scheduled at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

If the two committees vote in favor of approving it, the decision will go to Dr. Rochel Wolensky, the director of the CDC.

Earlier this year, Pfizer applied to the FDA for an emergency use permit (EUA) for a third vaccine shot for all U.S. residents over the age of 16. Although many estimated that the U.S. would begin vaccinating its residents in a third dose as early as September, at the end of The FDA committee rejected the request and ruled that only those aged 65 and over, those with background diseases and immunosuppressants would be eligible to receive the booster.

Last week, the pharmaceutical giant submitted a new application following the results of the third phase of the clinical study conducted among about 10,000 experimenters, which showed that the third vaccine injection – the booster – is 95% effective in preventing symptomatic disease.

Although final approvals have not yet been received, it is worth mentioning that many local authorities – states, cities and counties – have already started offering the booster shot to all residents over the age of 18.

For example, in California it was decided not to wait for federal health authorities, and now any resident over the age of 18 can be vaccinated with a third dose, provided they received the last vaccine six months ago (Pfizer or Modern) or two months (Johnson & Johnson).

The New York City Department of Public Health has announced a similar move, as have a number of states such as Arkansas, New Mexico and Colorado.
