Research: ventilators killed almost all corona patients

Most of the corona patients who needed help from the ventilator also developed fatal secondary bacterial pneumonia, according to an analysis published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation

Most of the corona patients who died in the hospital in the early stage of the epidemic died as a result of being connected to a ventilator, according to a new study.

The analysis, which was publishedIn the Journal of Clinical InvestigationLast month, he found that most of the corona patients who needed help from the ventilator also developed secondary bacterial pneumonia. ,

“Our study highlights the importance of prevention, detection and aggressive treatment of secondary bacterial pneumonia in critically ill patients with severe pneumonia, including those with COVID-19,”saysBenjamin Singer, a pulmonologist at Northwestern University in Illinois

The team examined the records of 585 people admitted to the intensive care unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, also in Illinois. All of them suffered from severe pneumonia and/or respiratory failure, and 190 of them contracted corona.

By using the approach ofmachine learningTo go through the data, the researchers grouped patients based on their condition and the amount of time they spent in intensive care. The findings disprove the ideaCytokine stormFollowing COVID-19 – an overwhelming inflammatory response that causes organ failure – was responsible for a significant number of deaths. No evidence of multisystem failure was found in the studied patients

In other words, although the corona may have put these people in the hospital, the secondary infection of bacterial pneumonia after they were put on a ventilator was responsible for the higher death rate, a condition called ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).

“Those who were cured of their secondary pneumonia were more likely to live, while those whose pneumonia did not resolve were at a higher risk of dying,” according to Singer.

“Our data indicated that the mortality associated with the virus itself is relatively low, but other things that happen during the intensive care stay, such as secondary bacterial pneumonia, offset this.”

The researchers emphasized that the findings do not reduce the health risks of the corona virus itself, because for the patient to even need a ventilator means that he is already experiencing breathing problems from the Chinese virus.

It is worth remembering that if the patient’s requirement for the ventilator to treat the complications of COVID-19 leads to VAP, this does not mean that the infection with COVID-19 is less dangerous, nor does it reduce the number of deaths from COVID-19.

aswho writeThe authors in their article, “The relatively long length of stay among COVID-19 patients is mainly due to prolonged respiratory failure, which places them at a higher risk of VAP.”

But the findings highlight the need for more research and caution when making assumptions about the cause of death in COVID-19 cases. Detailed molecular analysis from that study should reveal more about what makes the difference between recovery or not from VAP.

The study confirms reports in the mainstream media from 2020 thatAbout 90% of the corona patients who were connected to ventilators died‏.‏

The difference is that the media claimed that the high mortality was due to existing health conditions and the severity of the corona virus – and not from pneumonia caused by ventilators.
